Consider this some tough love for young or emerging artists from one creative to another. It's difficult to sell anyone on your individualism when you keep repackaging the same old anti-establishment, rebellious, stick it to the man, I’m angry at my Republican parents, nobody gets me routine. So stop wearing all black, please get some sun on that pail hollow face, think hard about the next piercing or tattoo, and for God’s sake eat something. I can’t see you when you turn sideways…you look like Gumby. Authenticity in your work and in your life, can only come from letting the world in…not from shutting it out. And just so you know…true joy can be just as artistically validating as deep pain. So be brave, and tell us YOUR story. Not a story you think an artist should have. And guess what, if it’s not interesting enough for anyone to care about, much less purchase…you only have yourself to blame. You control the level of interest in your own life. One more News Flash…It’s not everyone else’s fault that you can’t finish something, or ride-out the storms you have a huge hand in creating.
The Realization:
Listen, I’m not trying to bring anyone down, but way too many of you are in need of a serious reality check. Please realize that just because you may have creative tendencies or crafty inclinations, doesn’t mean you’re an artistic original. It means you have the opportunity, every day, to provide authentic perspectives that both evoke and provoke. But if you expect to really affect people with your work...YOU have to work at it! Yes, relevant creativity is work…and you can’t always wait for the situation to be “just right” to flip the switch. If creativity is a discretionary activity…it’s a hobby. And the only way to transform a hobby into a calling is to live not only with your art, but in it. I guess I just believe artists have a unique responsibility, to deliver the important perspectives that only come from artistic innovation. Vulnerability in life and exposing yourself to new or uncomfortable situations will absolutely help you to engage creatively. But you must also have the courage to proudly wear the badge of intellectual curiosity that leads to real discovery, understanding and living with authenticity in your moments. Then, and only then, are you truly empowered by the richness of your personal experiences, and able to effectively communicate to others your unique vision of the world.
